Academic Services

Executive functioning deficits often manifest themselves in academic tasks such as reading comprehension, written expression, and test taking. Those who struggle with executive functioning weaknesses often have a hard time with drawing on their prior knowledge as they read. In addition, these individuals can often have difficulty with interpreting words, drawing inferences, and processing essential information. Another area of difficulty these individuals face is knowing how to prioritize which parts of a text are useful for a given assignment. These particular areas are difficult for those with EF deficits because writing requires students to plan, engage in flexible thinking (paraphrasing the topic), organize, prioritize, and utilize text sources. Students with EF deficits may also be poor test-takers. This is often due to the fact that they are unable to prioritize which information to study when preparing for a test. Once they begin a test, they are often unable to prioritize tasks, plan responses, or monitor their time. At Effective Educational and Therapeutic Services, we utilize our special education and clinical backgrounds to develop an individualized approach to best support our clients with various learning struggles.

Subject-Specific Intervention

  • Reading Intervention

Our academic interventionists are certified special education teachers who provide targeted intervention in the area of reading and literacy. Reading instruction is designed to address difficulties in decoding, encoding, and fluency with a highly structured, prescriptive and systematic approach. Comprehension instruction is direct and explicit, focusing on the literal, inferential and evaluative meaning of texts. In addition, our academic interventionists are trained in many evidence-based reading and literacy programs that can specifically target a client’s reading needs.

  • Writing Support

Components of effective writing include grammatical skill, compositional skill, and domain knowledge. Our academic interventionists help clients develop an understanding of the different types of writing as well as features of effective writing such as focus, organization, elaboration, conventions and style.

  • Math Support

Students who experience difficulty with working memory, numerical reasoning, and applied problem solving often need targeted intervention and specialized instruction to support mathematical success. Our math interventionists support students in all grade levels to specifically target their areas of challenge, which in turn, develops understanding and overall confidence in the subject content.

College Support

  • SAT Prep

We understand that “high stakes” tests can be a source of anxiety and stress for many of our clients. Our SAT support is tailored specifically to each student’s individualized learning needs. This 1:1 support consists of an overview of the test, goal setting, test basics, and time management strategies. Through direct instruction, students are exposed to all aspects of the math and language arts portions of the test. Math instruction consists of algebra, geometry, pre calc, data analysis, and numeric problem solving. Language arts support consists of long and dual passage analysis, and grammar use strategies.

  • College application process

The college admissions process can be overwhelming for many students, and can be especially challenging for those with learning differences. Many of our clients struggle with a number of executive functioning challenges like task initiation, time management, and organization. These challenges, compounded with difficulties in written expression and an overwhelming feeling of anxiety, lead many of our students to feel avoidant of the process as a whole. Our individually tailored approach meets each student where they are and breaks down this seemingly daunting undertaking into manageable steps. Students are empowered to be accountable with the process as we support them through a systematic approach with chunking each task incrementally and providing manageable deadlines. College Essay Support is provided within the college application process, as many students require direct, explicit guided literary instruction.
